History
Above the gold house of Kyoto The site which currently the town of Kyoto occupies, capital of the prefecture éponyme, seems to be occupied since the era Jomon (10 000 to 300 front J. - C.) via an immigration of Korean origin. The first families which seem to have been established in these places are Hata.
The city located in these places was originally called Yamashiro. It is into 794 that the Kammu emperor decides, with fine policies, to be made build a capital. It chooses like model of construction that of the capital of Tang (Changan), i.e. a geometrical organization (streets being either parallel or perpendiculars ones with the others).
Yamashiro will take then the name Heian-kyo (city of peace), it is only later, about 1227, that the term of Kyoto (capital city) will appear. Heian-kyo will know a considerable growth although the civil war of Ônin (1467-1477) almost entirely destroyed it. The city owes its safety only in Toyotomi Hideyoshi which rebuilds it and made many alterations to him.
Kyoto lost its statute of capital in 1868 on decision of the Meiji emperor when this one decided to transfer the capital to Edo (Tokyo). This decision carried a blow to the urban development. During the second world war, decision was made to save the city in order to protect its inheritance. So today Kyoto and its more than 1.500.000 hearts is not any more the capital administrative and political of Japan, it remains and remains the cultural capital of the archipelago.
In 1994 the monuments of old Kyoto will be registered with the inventory of the world inheritance of UNESCO. We propose a list of these monuments to you. Geography Kyoto, girdled by the mounts Atagoyam, Hieizan and Tamba, is located in the fertile area of Kinki in the middle of the plains of the center of the principal island Honshu. The rivers Kamo-gawa etet katsura-gawa, run out respectively in its is and its west to join the Kodo-gawa river.
The prefectures of Osaka and Hyogo are in its west, the prefectures of Shiga, Mie and Fukui with its are, and that of Nara in the south. Economy The electronics industry and software is particularly active with the company Kyocera and Nitendo.
Tourism and the craft industry are however the principal sources of use and incomes of the city.

Orientation
Kyoto is the one major Japanese city laid out on a grid. This makes for easy navigating, even though street signs are often only in Japanese--or non-existant. Kyotoites describe the downtown area of the city as being a "go-ban"(a go board, "go" being the highly popular game that uses a square board). The city borrowed its design from the ancient Chinese capital, Xian. The ward names reflect this orientation, too: Sakyo ku means "Left Capital, and is in the east; Ukyo ku means "Right Capital," and is in the west of the city.
City Centre (Shijo-Kawaramachi) lies 2km north of Kyoto Station.
Higashiyama - the area to the east of the city center contains the majority of Kyoto's main hotel ist sites. The #5 bus is convenient for many of them but is invariably crowded.
North Western Kyoto including Arashiyama can be reached by bus and train from Kyoto station.
Northern Kyoto is best served by the north-south Karasuma Line subway.
Western north.
Kita-Ku, Kamigyo and Ukyo-ku: Are districts in the western north of the city sheltering of true jewels like Daitoku-ji (Zen ryokan of XVème century), it Kôto-in (house of tea), the daisen (ryokan of XVIème century).
Takagamine: Northern district where is placed celebrates it Kinkaku-ji (pavillond' gold) but also the Jôshô-ji ryokan, the Shôden-ji ryokan and its perfect sand garden, the superb garden Zen Ryôan-ji.

It is in this district that each year two prestigious festivals Gosan Okuribi in August and Gion matsuri in July are held. This district shelters the bridge Shijo, the park Maruyama, the ryokans Chion-in, Kennin-ji, Shôren-in, Yasaka, of the theatres of kabuki like Minami-za. It is also supposed being the district of Geisha but do not hope however too to see some.
