you should have gone! i'm thinking about traveling around the indian ocean, as much as possible on cargo ships etc just for the authentic vibe. i want to hit up places in the mid east and african coast and hopefully get tossed around by some waves for a bit of adventure along the way..

samui is packed over the christmas holiday. december and january full moon parties on neighboring koh phangan have many thousands in attendance. i don't know of any ferries that will take you over the gulf from cambodia or vietnam into thailand..

Freediving In The Philippines - Trip Report

I'm love free diving and spearfishing so I decided to incorporate the two with my holiday. Prior to my departure I carried out extensive research into where to go in the Philippines. After a great deal of research I got in contact with two Austrian guys who lived and worked in Cebu, Philippines. One of the guys, Wolfgang, worked at Club Serena in Moalboal, where he is a dive instructor and AIDA trained freediving instructor. As luck would have it he runs a freediving course. My wife and I arrived at Cebu City at the beginning of May - the hottest time of year in the Philippines. On arrival you usually need to make your way to Moalboal by taxi or hotel minibus. Thankfully, however, Wolfgang's friend [Christoph] was very generously offered to pick us up from the airport and drive us to Moalboal. The actual journey to Moalboal was really beautiful.

From the international airport located in Metro Manila, its a 3 hour drive to the jump off point. From there, its another hour of a bumpy 4x4 drive. then around 2.5 hours of trekking before you reach the crater. You can also actually swim inside the crater since it has a lake. We do have packages for that..

 

Travel Locations with the most friendly people

What constitutes "friendly" is not always an instant smile. I lived in a coastal area of Prachuap Khirikhan province for 3 years. The first thing I noticed is that people seldom smile when you pass them on the street. That being said, when I would actually greet them, engage them in my version of a conversation, they would smile indeed .. and you could see the sincerity in their smile. One family "adopted" me, as brother of the shop owner. Another offered assistance when I was trying to find a new house to rent. At the weekend market, one seller was continually trying to find me a lady friend. And I was NEVER charged more than the locals .. maybe even less than Bangkok people. ;) Then there was the "fried banana lady" with a stand near my house. She teased me mercilessly, always pretending she didn't know what I wanted .

S. Koreans attracted to Japan's southern parts, Taiwanese north

South Korean travelers to Japan tend to visit the southern parts, particularly for golfing, while visitors from Taiwan like to go the northern parts to enjoy the ice and snow, Japan's white paper on tourism for fiscal 2007 showed Friday. The overall number of visitors from abroad came to 8.35 million, marking a record for the fourth consecutive year. South Koreans accounted for some 30 percent, or 2.6 million, followed by Taiwanese at 1.39 million, Chinese at 940,000 and Americans at 820,000, according to the white paper.

Japan's famous feline cartoon character Hello Kitty was appointed Monday as a goodwill tourism ambassador in China and Hong Kong for one year, ministry official said. Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism Minister Tetsuzo Fuyushiba handed out a letter of appointment to a person clad in a Kitty costume, marking the first time a cartoon character has been appointed to the post for promoting the official Visit Japan Campaign.

Tourism Agency, upgraded transport safety panel to start in October

The Diet passed bills on Friday for the establishment of the Tourism Agency and an upgraded transport safety board, both of which are scheduled to be inaugurated in October. The Tourism Agency is expected to play a role in achieving the government's targets such as increasing the number of foreign visitors to Japan to 10 million per year by 2010 as well as boosting spending on domestic holidays to 30 billion yen.

 

Tourists to be allowed back into Tibet from May 1, daily says

Tourists from home and abroad will be allowed back into Tibet from May 1 for the first time since last month's deadly riots, a local newspaper reported Thursday. The Tibet commercial newspaper said in its online article that the information was revealed at a meeting of tourism industry officials held in Lhasa on Wednesday. It did not say who made the announcement.

 

Japan accommodates 304 mil. in 2007, foreigners accounting for 7.2%

Hotels and other lodgings across Japan accommodated a total of 304.45 million people in 2007, of whom 7.2 percent or 21.91 million people were travelers from overseas, a Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism Ministry survey showed Wednesday. Of the foreign tourists who used accommodation last year, South Koreans constituted the largest group at 4.24 million, followed by Taiwan's 3.81 million and 2.86 million from the United States. The total figure of the top three accounted for about half of all foreign tourists.

 

Japan aims to draw 9.15 mil. foreign tourists in 2008

The transport ministry set a new goal Monday for seeing 9.15 million foreign tourists visit Japan this year, up 9.6 percent from the actual number of foreign tourists in 2007, ministry officials said. The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism will begin advertising campaigns targeting various age groups and sexes in 12 countries and territories including South Korea and Taiwan.

 

China tries to allay safety fears after tourists taken hostage

China's government said Thursday the country is safe to visit despite an incident the previous day in which a busload of Australians was briefly taken hostage in the historic northwestern city of Xi'an. A man armed with explosives was shot dead by police Wednesday after holding one of the 10 Australians, all of them travel agents, and a Chinese translator captive for several hours.
